But then the Panthers played a nearly flawless Game Seven, Sergei Bobrovsky stood on his head, Sam Reinhart potted an innocuous Cup winner on the rush, and the rest is admittedly, less so than it could have been history. For the fourth time in seven years, a new team has won the Stanley Cup, and it’s, what just a few short years ago seemed inconceivable, the Florida Panthers.
It was the first Finals since 1945 to see a team force a seventh game after being down 3–0, with Florida becoming the first team since that occurrence to win the title in seven games after surrendering a 3–0 series lead. This was also the first Stanley Cup Final since 2018 where no games went to overtime and the first since 2019 in which the losing team scored more goals.
We should at least mention the Edmonton Oilers a bit. Connor McDavid earned that Conn Smythe fair and square, though I wish he would have sucked it up and received the trophy on the ice. It’s not every day that someone breaks a Wayne Gretzky record!
Back to the Champs, I love when teams win the Cup at home. We’ve had quite a few lately after what felt like years of road wins. Those red jerseys look gorgeous in victory.
Congrats to the Florida Panthers!
