Alex Ovechkin breaks NHL goals record

Alex Ovechkin has officially etched his name in hockey history, surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s legendary record for the most goals in NHL history. On Sunday, the Washington Capitals captain scored his 895th career goal during a power play against the New York Islanders, marking a milestone that many thought was unbreakable.

The goal came in the second period, with Ovechkin firing a wrist shot past fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin. The arena erupted in cheers as teammates swarmed Ovechkin on the ice, celebrating the achievement that dethroned Gretzky’s 31-year reign as the NHL’s all-time leading scorer. Gretzky himself was present to witness the historic moment, joining the standing ovation and congratulating Ovechkin on his incredible feat.

Ovechkin’s journey to this record has been nothing short of remarkable. Since his rookie season in 2005-06, he has consistently delivered one stellar season after another, earning nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies as the league’s top goal scorer. Despite setbacks, including a broken leg earlier this season, Ovechkin’s resilience and determination propelled him to this extraordinary achievement.
